OUR LADY OF THE PARAKEETS
An old stone path leads to the Mata
An old stone path leads to the Mata
Between Valera and Sabana Libre is the point
In the Mata lived a lonely and strange lady
and her home was a house with a garden and chicken coop
and a cage of parakeets
She could not live without her parakeets
At dawn on Saturdays she came down with her basket of eggs
and vegetables to sell them at the market in Valera
Her walk through the street Cordoba was a surprise
She could not live without their parakeets
Before leaving home she would put her parakeets inside two pierced gourds
and each of the gourds was a tit of hers
On Saturday one of us had to watch for her arrival via the cemetery
When the night was almost day and after seeing her at a distance
whose turn it was to watch ran around the neighborhood
shouting from door to door
ARISE ARISE
HERE COMES THE OLD LADY WITH THE PARAKEETS HERE SHE COMES
Then we got up and through the cracks
of the windows we saw her go by with her winged hat on
and her dress and her basket of flowers and her dignity
and a major scandal in her chest

of the windows we saw her go by with her winged hat on
and her dress and her basket of flowers and her dignity
and a major scandal in her chest
