About the conditions of the solitary bird
The conditions of the solitary bird are five: the first, that it flies to the highest point; the second, that it does not suffer for company, not even if its own kind; the third, that it aims its peak up in the air; the fourth, that it does not have a determined color; the fifth, that it sings very softly. All of which the contemplative soul must have: that it must rise above the transitory things, not paying attention to them anymore than if they were not, and must be so fond of solitude and silence, that it does not suffer the company of another creature; it must put the peak up in the air of the Holy Spirit, according to its inspirations, so that, in doing so, becomes more worthy of its company; that it does not have a determined color, having no determination on anything, but that of the will of God; that it has to sing softly in contemplation and for the love of her husband.
