 MAPA DE COLOMBIA

En la escuela rural
los niños examinan el mapa,
deletrean
los nombres de los ríos que forman una inmensa
telaraña reseca sobre llanos y valles.
Los volcanes, las cuencas, las ensenadas,
caben, doblados, entre sus cuadernos:
son sólo música de eles o de oes,
puntos verdes, sombreados amarillos
bajo la uña brillante de la joven maestra.

A la hora de la cena, en las palabras
de los mayores,
los niños adivinan
que algo se arrastra y tiembla en los caminos,
que algo baja, sin ojos, entre los ríos.
Alguno sueña con el mar que ha visto
en la tevé o despierta, sollozante,
cuando oye gritos, súplicas, disparos.
Las líneas de otro paisaje
crecen lento en la palma de sus manos:
si miras bien
verás qué hondo es el surco de su destino.

MAP OF COLOMBIA

In the rural school
children examine the map,
spell
the names of the rivers that form a vast
cobweb on dry plains and valleys.
The volcanoes, basins, inlets,
fit, pleated, inside their notebooks:
they are just music of l's and oes,
green dots, yellow shades
under the bright nail of the young teacher. 

At dinnertime, in the words
of the grownups,
the children guess
that something crawls and trembles on the roads,
something goes down, without eyes, between the rivers.
Someone dreams about the sea he has seen
in the tv or wakes up, sobbing,
when he hears cries, pleas, shots.
The lines of another landscape
grow slowly in the palm of his hands:
if you look good
you will see how deep is the furrow of his destiny.
