 BÁRBAROS

Llegaron por mar,
los bárbaros.
Sus barbudos cadáveres
fueron cubiertos
por la arena.

Eso fue hace mucho tiempo
pero lo recuerdo bien,
creíamos que se habían
marchado para siempre.

La segunda vez
no llegaron por mar
ni por ninguna parte.
Dormían con nosotros,
en el mismo lecho,
bajo el mismo techo.

Destruyeron
todo lo que amábamos.

Cuando se retiren
-los bárbaros siempre se retiran-,
no construiremos más murallas,
levantaremos puentes,
para estar más cerca del agua.

Barbarians

To Herman Sifontes

They arrived by sea,

the savages.

Their bearded corpses

were covered

by the sand.

That was a long time ago

but I remember it well,

we thought they had been

gone forever.

The second time around

they did not arrive by sea

nor from anywhere.

They slept with us,

on the same bed,

under the same roof.

They destroyed

everything we loved.

When they leave

-barbarians always retreat-,

we will not build more walls,

we will build bridges,

to be closer to the water.
