---En Memorial expresó: 

Enmudezco
en medio de lo real,
y lo real dice
con su lenguaje
lo que yo guardo....
Callo. No voy más allá de mis ojos.
Me consta este alrededor.

¿La realidad prima por sobre la palabra? ¿Cómo se relacionan?

---La realidad es el Todo, pero sin palabra yo no podría decir eso, ni habría mundo. Tampoco puede ella sustituir la realidad. Es una segunda instancia que no la reproduce. Deberíamos considerarla sólo como versión. Eso sería muy saludable: relativiza lo que decimos. Creo que no hay antídoto mejor para los fanatismos engendrados por las absolutizaciones.

---En su poesía, el silencio habla, sugiere. ¿Cómo lo logra?

---Diciendo sin decir todo. Por eso exige mucho al lector y suele dejarlo insatisfecho si busca en ella lo propio de la prosa. En esta hay menos silencio, salvo cuando se vuelve poética. Debe haber sintonía entre lector y poema. Además, en la prosa cabe todo, no así en la poesía, que tiene restricciones, a pesar de que hoy se le ha aproximado mucho gracias al verso libre y el poema en prosa. Lo dicho intenta explicar el hecho de que se lea menos poesía de todo lo demás.

---Juan Gelman ha dicho que la poesía es un árbol sin hojas que da sombra. ¿Qué es para usted la poesía?

---Escritura esencial, artística, y cuando no es eso se trata de una dimensión indefinible que está presente en el vivir y tras las otras artes, es lo que las anima, es el alma de ellas. Por supuesto, el poema es el hogar de esa dimensión, y si no está ahí, su autor debe saberlo antes que los lectores.

 --- In Memorial you said:

I am speechless
in the midst of the real,
and the real speaks
with its language
what I keep....
I become silent. I do not go beyond my eyes.
This exterior is evident to me.

Reality takes precedence over the word? How do they relate?

--- Reality is All, but without the word I could not say that, nor would there be world. Nor can it replace reality. It is another instance that does not reproduce it. We should only consider it as a version. That would be very healthy: it diminishes the importance of what we say. I think there is no better antidote to fanaticism engendered by dictatorship.

--- In your poetry, silence speaks, it suggests. How are you capable of doing that?

--- Saying without saying everything. This is the reason why it is so demanding on the reader and often leaves him unsatisfied if he looks  in it prose. This is less quiet, except when it becomes poetic. There must be harmony between reader and poem. Furthermore, everything fits in prose, not in poetry, which is restricted, although today it has been much closer thanks to free verse and the prose poem. The above attempts to explain the fact that poetry is read less than everything else.

--- Juan Gelman has said that poetry is a leafless tree that gives shade. What is poetry for you?

--- Essential writing, artistic, and when it is not that, it is an indefinable dimension which is present in life and behind the other arts, it is what animates them, it is their soul. Of course, the poem is the home of that dimension, and if it is not there, the author must know it before the readers.
