Precisamente hoy he sentido necesidad de homenajear a mis abuelas materna, Mercedes Cadenas y paterna, Ana Isolina Rincón.
We, the Méndez Colmenares family, emigrated to the United States in August 1964. I was twelve years old and my life was broken in two caused by the movement to that other sky. Precisely today I have felt the need to pay homage to my grandmothers, my mother's mother, Mercedes Cadenas, and my father's mother, Ana Isolina Rincón. This family photograph celebrates our second Christmas in Bellaire, Texas, in 1965. I am the one dressed in pink who smiles, like the rest, directly at the camera. I remember little about this moment, just that the world was opening up for me in that other culture, in that other world so far away from Venezuela. My father returns to Venezuela in 1966 in order to travel once a year, during Christmas, between Houston and Caracas. I return to Venezuela in 1976 pregnant with my daughter Nayarí Castillo and since then I am the only one of the kids who has resided permanently in this land.
