Rasguños, limaduras de piel,

instantes que permanecen porque dejaron cicatrices,

tal es la vida que puede contarse de aquel hombre.

Él fue feliz, sólo él lo supo,

lo supo a su manera

-buena la digestión, mejor el sueño-,

pero estuvo donde estalló la pólvora,

practicó deportes rudos,

dejó a su corazón endurecerse

y su biografía se cuenta por heridas que disfrazan la dicha.

No amó, sobra advertirlo

-dije que fue feliz-,

pero acumuló afectos y lealtades,

inesperados cómplices que acudían a él con un chasquido,

mujeres dispuestas a morir por él

(con él no vivirían);

sólo una noche, una temporada cuando más

con este soldado que no sufre

o que sabe sufrir,

no demasiado tiempo con este solitario,

con este sobreviviente.

Sus biógrafos resaltarán su heroísmo

y él desde su tumba

pedirá que barajen y repartan de nuevo

Biography

Scratches, flakes of skin,
moments that remain because they left scars,
such is the life that can be told of that man.
He was happy, only he knew,
he knew it his way
-good digestion, better sleep,-
but he was there when the gunpowder exploded,
he practiced tough sports,
let his heart harden
and his biography is counted by the wounds that disguise the joy.
