¿Qué es Caracas?

El imaginario colectivo del caraqueño dejó de pensarse en una ciudad moderna.

- Si Caracas ya no es el paradigma de la modernidad, ¿qué es?, ¿cómo la ve?

- Presenta un deterioro tal que yo le decía a mis compañeros arquitectos que el ser humano es uno de los animales que más rápido se adapta a las condiciones nuevas. Y no se dan cuenta de lo mal que se está viviendo. Hay un acostumbramiento a que toda la ciudad sea una especie de basurero. La gente está como indiferente. Es un indicador grave que, debido a la inseguridad, ya no sean rejas sino pantallas de acero las que cierran los negocios. Es gravísimo también que el uso del tiempo libre se tenga que hacer en un centro comercial. El deterioro de Caracas está llegando a un límite en la medida en que nada funciona adecuadamente, está colapsando todo. Pero no quiero ser apocalíptico, sólo digo que el caraqueño se ha ido acostumbrando a esa condición.

- ¿Tenemos entonces a un nuevo ciudadano?

- Totalmente. Todo el mundo tiene un grado de hostilidad que se evidencia desde que uno llega al aeropuerto. Se es tratado con desconfianza, de manera brusca, no hay amabilidad, y eso responde a ese sentimiento de inseguridad de la gente. La gran inestabilidad emocional que tienen se pone de manifiesto en un trato no ciudadano; es decir, no perteneciente a un cuerpo social en el que la convivencia es el principio elemental que te permite ser ciudadano.

The collective imaginary of Caracas no longer thinks itself as a modern city.
- If Caracas is no longer the paradigm of modernity, what is it?, how do you see it?
- It presents such a deterioration that I said to my fellow architects that man is one of those animals that adapts  rapidly to new conditions. And they do not realize how bad they are living. They have grown used to the whole city as a kind of rubbish dump. The people are indifferent. It is a serious indicator, that due to insecurity, there are no longer installed iron screens but steel gates that close up business shops. It is very serious that free time has to be spent in shopping centers. The deterioration of Caracas is reaching a limit to the extent that nothing works properly, everything is collapsing. But I do not want to be apocalyptic, I am just saying that Caracas has grown accustomed to that condition.

- Do we have, then, a new citizen?
- Totally. Everyone has a degree of hostility that it is evident from the moment you arrive at the airport. You are treated with suspicion, abruptly, shown no kindness, and that responds to that feeling of insecurity among the people. The emotional instability is evidenced in a non-citizen treatment, they do not belong to a social body in which coexistence is the fundamental principle that allows you to be a citizen.
