Art Happens: la cultura en peligro

Es raro que alguien quiera haber sido objeto de una broma; tal es, inverosímilmente, mi caso. Ha llegado a mis manos un manuscrito cuya materia es la reforma -llamémosla así- de los estudios de la Facultad de Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Soy doctor emérito de esa casa. En esta ocasión, como en otras, no he sido consultado, pero me creo con derecho a opinar. Transcribo el asombroso texto: 

"Todas las literaturas extranjeras podrán ser optativas y pueden sustituirse, por ejemplo: por Literatura media y popular. Medios de comunicación. Folclore literario. Sociología de la literatura. Sociolingüística. Psicolingüística.” 

Prefiero creer que este misterioso proyecto es jocoso, o trata de serlo; si ha sido escrito para ser leído literalmente, es alarmante o terrorífico. Abolir las literaturas extranjeras es, de hecho, abolir humanidades, es decir, la cultura. El verbo sustituir ha sido empleado de manera indebida. Puede sustituirse una taza de café por una de té, pero no el estudio de Virgilio, o el de Voltaire, por el de Canal 13. En cuanto a "literatura media" confieso mi invencible ignorancia; quizá se trate simplemente de literatura mediocre, acaso la de autores que asimismo son funcionarios. En lo que se refiere a "folklore" (voz acuñada en Inglaterra, en 1846) contaré una anécdota personal.
Hace ya muchos años. Néstor Ibarra y yo conversábamos con un amigo común, el tropero Soto. Ibarra le dijo:
—Usted es entrerriano. Usted creerá, sin duda, en los lobizones.
El paisano le contestó:
—No crea señor. Esas son fábulas.
Como se ve el pueblo es menos crédulo que los crédulos folkloristas. Si el folklore me interesara, lo buscaría en tierras muy antiguas, como la India, o primitivas como el Senegal. No en las provincias argentinas, de tradición reciente. Me dicen, sin embargo, que gracias a las autoridades, el folklore ha llegado ya a la campaña.
¿Qué será la sociología de la literatura? El hecho estético es un brusco milagro. No puede ser previsto. Me place recordar que el pintor Whistler dijo una vez Art happens, el Arte sucede. Ya el místico alemán Ángelus Silecius había declarado: Die Rose Ist ohn'Warum, la rosa es sin porqué.
¿Qué serán la sociolingüística y la psicolingüística? Como del resto del universo, nada sé de esas disciplinas o neologismos, pero sé que no pueden "sustituir" a las Mil y Una Noches o a las aventuras de Alicia.
Según es fama, los argentinos somos ingenuos. Para acallar toda sospecha convendría que algún personaje oficial desmintiera en letras de molde el estrafalario catálogo que denuncio.

It is rare that someone would want to be object of a joke as this one; that is improbable in my case. A manuscript has come to my hands about the reform-let us call it that- of the program of studies of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Buenos Aires. I am a doctor emeritus of that university. On this occasion, as in others, I have not been consulted, but I feel I have the right to an opinion. Here I transcribe the amazing text:

"All foreign literature may be optional and can be substituted, for example, by middle and popular literature. Media and communications. Folklore literature. Sociology of Literature. Sociolinguistics. Psycholinguistics."

I prefer to believe that this mysterious project is humorous, or tries to be, if it has been written to be read literally, it is alarming or frightening. To abolish foreign literature is, in fact, to abolish the humanities, or better said, to abolish culture. The verb substituted has been used improperly. You can substitute a cup of coffee for one of tea, but not the study of Virgil, or Voltaire, by Channel 13. About "middle literature" I confess my invincible ignorance; maybe it is just mediocre literature, perhaps the authors of which are also civil servants. In regard to "folklore" (a word coined in England in 1846) I can tell you a personal anecdote.Many years ago. Nestor Ibarra and I were talking with a mutual friend, the drover Soto. Ibarra said to him:
        "You're entrerriano. You believe, no doubt, in the werewolves."
        The peasant replied:
        "Do not believe it, sir. Those are fables."

As you see the people are less credulous than the gullible folklorists. If folklore would interest me, I would look for it in very ancient lands like India, or in primitive lands, such as Senegal. Not in the Argentine provinces of recent tradition. They say, however, thanks to the authorities, that folklore has come to the plains.What is the sociology of literature? The aesthetic fact is a sudden miracle. It can not be expected. I am pleased to recall that the painter Whistler once said Art Happens. Already the German mystic Angelus Silecius had declared Die Rose Ist ohn'Warum, the rose is without a reason.

What are sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics? As the rest of the universe, I know nothing of these disciplines or neologisms, but I know they can not "substitute" the Thousand and One Nights or Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

As it is known, we Argentines are naive. To quell any suspicion it would be convenient that an official employee deny in print the quirky catalog I am denouncing.
