Para muchos pueblos del África negra, los antepasados son los espíritus que están vivos en el árbol que crece junto a tu casa o en la vaca que pasta en el campo. El bisabuelo de tu tatarabuelo es ahora aquel arroyo que serpentea en la montaña. Y también tu ancestro puede ser cualquier espíritu que quiera acompañarte en tu viaje en el mundo, aunque no haya sido nunca pariente ni conocido.

La familia no tiene fronteras, explica Soboulu Somé, del pueblo dagara:

--Nuestros niños tienen muchas madres y muchos padres. Tantos como ellos quieran.

Y los espíritus ancestrales, los que te ayudan a caminar, son los muchos abuelos que cada uno tiene. Tantos como quieras.

 Grandparents

For many black African peoples, the ancestors are the spirits that are alive in the tree that grows near your home or in a cow grazing in the field. Your great-great-grandfather is now the stream that winds through the mountains. And your ancestor can be any spirit that wants to accompany you on your journey into the world, even though it has never been a relative or acquaintance.

The family has no boundaries, explains Soboulu Somé from the Dagara Village:

- Our children have many mothers and many fathers. As many as they want.

And the ancestral spirits, those who help you walk, are the many grandparents that everyone has. As many as you want.
