De barro somos

Según creían los antiguos sumerios, el mundo era tierra entre dos ríos y también entre dos cielos.

En el cielo de arriba, vivían los dioses que mandaban.

En el cielo de abajo, los dioses que trabajaban.

Y así fue, hasta que los dioses de abajo se hartaron de vivir trabajando, y estalló la primera huelga de la historia universal.

Hubo pánico.

Para no morir de hambre, los dioses de arriba amasaron de barro a las mujeres y a los hombres y los pusieron a trabajar para ellos.

Las mujeres y los hombres fueron nacidos de las orillas de los ríos Tigris y Éufrates.

De ese barro fueron hechos, también, los libros que lo cuentan.

Según dicen esos libros, morir significa regresar al barro.

 Out of clay we are made

According to what the ancient Sumerians believed, the world was earth between two rivers and also between two skies.

In the sky above, lived the gods who were in power.

In the sky below, lived the gods who worked.

And this was so, until the gods from below grew tired of living just to work, and this caused the first strike in world history.

There was panic.

To avoid starvation, the gods from above kneaded out of clay women and men and put them to work for them.

Women and men were born out of the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

Out of that clay were made, too, the books that tell this story.

These books say, to die means to return to the clay.
