setting creative boundaries

How do we become intimate with what is ours, take the bait that the Creative Source is holding out for us, and become one with what is unfolding? How do we successfully move past the stage of inquiry into full engagement? As with any love affair, you have to have a place to meet. The first step is to create space and time to nurture, support and revel in what has arrived. Let go of extraneous pursuits, cancel magazine subscriptions, disconnect the phone, or at least put a serious message on the answering machine. It was a breakthrough moment for me to put the message "I am writing today. Leave a message, and I'll call you back later" on my answering machine. Not only did I prevent interruptions, but I did call back, I got a lot of support from friends for setting that boundary around the creative process. Supporting engagement can also mean living in things that amplify whatever we are doing: narrowing down our search for images, collecting objects, gaining knowledge about a technique that would improve our skills, immersing ourselves in whatever the substance of our work seems to be.
