En la Calle del Arte de Santa Lucía::In Santa Lucía's Street of Art

La mayoría de las casas alineadas en la Avenida 2D no tienen corredores- se les entra directamente a la sala de estar a través de la puerta principal que da a la calle. Con la misma apertura con que los visitantes están invitados a su interior, al arte también se le da la bienvenida en los hogares de la gente durante la Velada de Santa Lucía. Porque aunque los protagonistas y sus exhibiciones cambian de año en año, siguen siendo recibidos por los residentes como los viejos amigos de siempre a quienes se le ofrecen hospitalidad sin la menor duda. En la casa de la Señora Ferrer Miquelena todavía se encuentra un cuadro en exhibición del año anterior. La señora explica que ella estaba tan contenta con ese collage que le solicitó al artista dejarselo ahí.
        En la avenida, que con sus fachadas de colores brillantes se asemeja a una obra de arte, la Velada ha dejado su huella así como ha enviado una señal que incluso los visitantes que vienen por primera vez pueden obserar. En un espíritu generoso, tolerante, los residentes permiten que los 120 o más artistas exhiban sus proyectos e instalaciones en las cocinas, en los patios y fachadas, que amontonen los muebles en el techo o transformen las paredes agrietadas en mapas imaginarios. En los días previos a la inauguración, la Avenida 2D se parece a una columna de hormigas transportando cajones llenos de arte, herramientas y escaleras. Además, los obreros se ocupan de reforestar las tinas de hormigón junto a la calle y de pintar los bordes de las aceras, mientras que en sus carritos los vendedores de raspados de frutas llenan jarras de plástico con agua helada que colorean con diferentes jarabes. Luego está Clemencia Labin, quien rápidamente va de casa en casa con su gran cuaderno negro bajo el brazo. Cuando todo esto ocurre, uno puede observar realmente como durante largos períodos de tiempo las rejas de las puertas permanecen abiertas. Esto es particularmente sorprendente en una ciudad de dos millones de habitantes donde, por temor a la delincuencia, las puertas siempre están bien cerradas y donde, en los distritos más acomodados, mantienen vigilancia noche y día.
        Dentro de la casas en la "Calle del Arte" las exhibiciones de un total de 400 participantes de la Velada- presentes por sí mismos o representados por curadores- poco a poco toman forma. A medida que esto evoluciona, nos convertimos en testigos de un juego fascinante que ocurre entre el interior privado de cada casa con todas sus fotografías de boda, los juguetes de los niños o sillones desgastados y las series fotográficas, objetos, imágenes o video-instalaciones que se exponen. Da la impresión de que estos espacios adquieren un nivel adicional- y   por lo tanto una nueva dimensión. Las esferas de la vida cotidiana y el arte se entremezclan de una manera única. Pero lejos de ocurrir en silencio o fuera de la vista, esta fusión se desarrolla en un despliegue abierto de dinamismo abrumador y magnetismo.
      La Velada de Santa Lucía es un lugar de encuentro no sólo para artistas contemporáneos de América del Sur y Europa, sino también para personas de todas las clases sociales, profesiones y edades. Durante dos noches enteras, la gente pasea por las calles de a miles, entra con su familia en las casas, examina el arte, hace preguntas o se toman fotos instantáneas frente a las exposiciones como si se tratara de lugares de interés turístico. Se escucha hablar Español, Inglés y Alemán también. Pero el lenguaje universal que, durante varias horas, une a todos los que han venido aquí es el arte.
        El compromiso excepcional de Clemencia Labin y su talento especial para reunir a personas de orígenes completamente diferentes es los que mantiene la Velada Santa Lucía viva. El éxito creciente de este evento tan importante en el calendario del arte contemporáneo en Venezulea se explica también por su profundo apego a su ciudad natal, Maracaibo, su pasión por las artes visuales y su papel como anfitriona, todo lo cual comparte con los residentes de la Avenida 2D. Esto es lo que, año tras año, anima a la comunidad de Santa Lucía a abrir las puertas de sus casas.

Most of the houses lining the Avenue 2D have no corridors- you enter the living room directly through the main door from the street. With the same openness as visitors are invited inside, art is also made welcome in people's homes here during the Velada Santa Lucía. For even if the protagonists and their exhibits change from year to year, they continue to be received by residents like the old friends one would always offer hospitality without hesitation. At Señora Ferrer Miquelena's you'll still find a painting on display from the year before. She was so taken by the collage that she asked the artist to leave it there, the Señora explains. 

        In the Avenida, which with its brightly colorful façades itself resembles a work of art, the Velada has left its mark as well as sending a signal- something not even visitors here for the first time fail to notice. In a generous, easy-going spirit, residents allow the 120 or more artists to spread out their projects and installations in the kitchens, on patios and façades, to bundle furniture up onto the roof or transform cracked walls into imaginary maps. In the days running up to the opening, the Avenida 2D resembles a column of ants transporting cases filled with art, tools and ladders. In addition, workers are busy replanting the concrete tubs by the road and painting the curbs, while fruit sellers and ice cone vendors are filling plastic beakers with ice water from their carts, which they color with different syrups. Then there is Clemencia Labin, scooting from house to house with her large black notebook under her arms. As all this goes on, one can actually observe how for long periods of time the grill doors stay open. This is particularly striking in a metropolis of two million inhabitants where, for fear of criminality, entrances are otherwise always securely locked and, in the more affluent districts, kept guarded day and night.

        Inside the houses on the "Street of Art" the exhibits of the Velada's altogether 400 participants- present in person or represented by curators- gradually assume shape. As this evolves, we become witness to a fascinating interplay between the private interiors with all their wedding photographs, children's toys or scuffed armchairs and the photographic series, objects, pictures or video installations going on display. One has the impression that these spaces are gaining an additional level- and thereby a new dimension. The spheres of everyday life and art become interfused in an unique manner. But far from happening on the quiet or out of sight, this fusion develops in an open display of overwhelming dynamism and magnetism.

      The Velada of Santa Lucia is a meeting place not only for contemporary artists from South America and Europe, but also for people of all social backgrounds, professions and age groups. For two whole evenings, people pour down the buzzing streets in their thousands, throng with their families into the houses, examine the art, ask questions or take photo snaps of one another in front of the exhibits as if they were sightseeing attractions. You hear Spanish, English and German too. But the universal language that, for several hours, unites everyone who has come here is art. 

       Clemencia Labin's exceptional commitment and her particular talent for bringing together people of completely different backgrounds are what keep the Velada Santa Lucia alive. But the steadily growing success of this most important event in Venezuela's calendar of contemporary arts can also be explained by her deep attachment to her home city, Maracaibo, her passion for the visual arts and her role as a host, all of which she shares with the residents of Avenida 2D. This is what, year after year, animates everyone there to open their doors.
