Quisiera expresar mi más
profundo agradecimiento por el galardón que me ha sido otorgado esta noche.
Lamento no poder estar con ustedes físicamente, pero sepan que mis pensamientos
si lo están y con estas palabras también mi corazón. Este premio no es mío, es
una condecoración a todos aquellos que han contribuido a mi formación como
artista, a los que creyeron en mi, me ayudaron y me llevaron agarrada de la
mano desde mis inicios. Soy partícipe de una generación formada en las academias
de arte con pasión y crítica; una generación trabajadora, dinámica y preocupada
por el acontecer cultural de Venezuela. Saludos a todos mis cómplices y amigos.
Aplausos para ustedes.
Agradezco a los que me han
dado la oportunidad de hacerme y expandirme en este mundo de creación de
sentido. También ofrezco tributo a las generaciones anteriores de artistas, a
mis queridos colegas premiados, a los críticos, curadores, museógrafos, galeristas,
operadores culturales y demás amigos que han llenado mis ojos de formas,
conceptos y una muy particular manera de ver el mundo. Aplaudo también a los
que han formado espacios alternativos y
continúan animando el intercambio de ideas en nuestro suelo. Quisiera hacer
aquí una lista con todos sus nombres, pero no alcanzarían los folios. Yo no soy
sola, soy creación de un proceso
colectivo, gracias por dejarme estar entre ustedes, por permitir formarme en
el seno de una familia grande y calurosa como lo es la cultura del país.
Una vez me encontré con el
gran Cy Twombly en un banquito de un
parque, me dijo que nunca había venido a Venezuela, pero que su amigo Bob,
refiriéndose a Rauschenberg, le había contado que era un lugar extraordinario,
que había sido tratado como un Rey, conocido gente respetuosa y culta y que sus
obras habían sido transportadas por grandes aviones de Guerra…a lo que con un
suspiro alegó: el mundo sería mejor si todas las estructuras de combate se
encargaran de movilizar arte y no de propagar muerte. A esa Venezuela donde todo era posible y en
especial a los que armaron con ímpetu nuestras
colecciones mi mas profundo respeto. Aquí comparto el honor de recibir este
premio con muchos de los seres que estructuraron y sentaron las bases de lo que
somos. A ellos les prometo que no desmayaremos y seguiremos trabajando por lo
que nos fue entregado.
A los que vienen tras de mi
les pido aplomo y resistencia. Abran sus corazones para el regalo más grande
del arte, la percepción abierta. Ser artista es una responsabilidad hermosa y compleja,
somos traductores, creamos puentes entre
el mundo y su imagen, somos capaces de
transformar lo que acontece y la manera de mirar. Pero
ser artista requiere también humildad, requiere de silencio para percibir la belleza
de lo que nos rodea y hacerla visible a los otros. Nuestro único trabajo, después
de todo, es resaltar maravillas. Gracias a todos por permitirme contemplar con
ustedes y al unísono.

I want to express my deepest gratitude for the award that has been granted to me tonight. I am sorry I can not be with you physically, but you must know that my thoughts are with you and with these words, my heart is too. This
award is not mine, it is an award to all those who have contributed to my
development as an artist, who believed in me, helped me and took me by the hand from my beginnings. I am
a participant of a generation trained in the academies of art with
passion and criticism; a working generation, energetic and concerned
about cultural events in Venezuela. Greetings to all my friends and accomplices. Applause for you.
I thank those who have given me the opportunity to make and expand myself into the world of making sense. I
also offer a tribute to previous generations of artists, my dear fellow
winners, critics, curators, curators, gallerysts, cultural operators
and other friends who have filled my eyes with forms, concepts and a
very particular way of seeing the world. I also applaud those who have made alternative spaces and continue to encourage the exchange of ideas on our soil. I would like to list of all your names, but I would run out of pages. I am
not alone, I am a creation of a collective process, thanks for letting me be
with you, for letting me be in the bosom of a large and warm family that
is the culture of our country.
Once I met the
great Cy Twombly on a bench in a park, he said he had never been to
Venezuela, but that his friend Bob, referring to Rauschenberg, had told
him that it was an extraordinary place, that he had been treated like a King, had met friendly and cultured people and that his art pieces had been carried
by large war aircraft... then he claimed with a sigh: the world would
be a better place if all the combat structures would mobilize art and
not spread death. To that Venezuela
where everything was possible and my deepest respect in particular to those who armed our collections with impetus. Here I share the honor to receive this award with many of the people who structured and laid the foundation of who we are. To the I promise that we will not stop and will continue working for what was given to us.
To those who come after me I ask self-possession and resistance. Open your hearts for the greatest gift of art, an open perception. Being
an artist is a beautiful and complex responsibility, we are
translators, we create bridges between the world and its image, we are able
to transform what is happening and the way to look. But
being an artist also requires humility, silence is required to perceive
the beauty of our surroundings and make it visible to others. Our only job, after all, is to highlight wonders. Thank you all for allowing me to contemplate with you and in unison.
