Nicolas Serota: Pero su modo de pintar ha cambiado muy significativamente a lo largo de los años. ¿Está usted consciente de tener una mayor libertad en el modo de pintar durante los últimos quince años?

Cy Twombly: Supongo, no sé. Depende del momento del día. También trabajo por oleadas, porque soy impaciente. Creo que debido a mi naturaleza física determinada, o a la falta de aire cuando estoy parado, trabajo ... de una manera impaciente. Hay que hacerlo y ahora me tomo libertades que no había tomado antes. Al igual que en las pinturas de flores [la serie Un reguero de flores], si no me gustaba lo que estaba haciendo, sin titubear siquiera lo cubría casi todo. Lograba efectos maravillosos que nunca antes había alcanzado. Todos ellos tienen hermosos pasajes, pasajes de gran tamaño, no como en las primeras pinturas. No sé porque me emocionaban las flores. A menudo es simple. Si hace calor hago algunas pinturas frescas. Muchas veces me gusta divertirme. A veces tengo momentos terribles con la pintura, como en la serie que está en Filadelfia [Cincuenta días en Iliam]. Puedo hacerlo muy bien ahora. Me refiero a que es mucho más fácil y mejor. Creo que estoy en un buen momento del trabajo.

Nicolas Serota: But the way you paint has changed very significantly over the years. Are you conscious of greater freedom in the way you paint during the last fifteen years or so?

Cy Twombly: I guess, I don't know. It depends on the moment of the day. Also I work in waves, because I'm impatient. Because due to a certain physicality, or lack of breath from standing, so I work in ... an impatient way. It has to be done and I take liberties I wouldn't have taken before. Like in those flower paintings [A scattering of Blossoms series], if I didn't like what I was doing, I just did round it without even looking to cover it out. I got all kinds of wonderful effects that I never achieved before. They all have beautiful passages, such large passages, not like those early paintings. I don't know what excited me with the blossoms. Sometimes it's simplistic. If it's hot I do some cool paintings. Lots of times I like to enjoy myself. Sometimes I have terrible times with painting, like that set in Philadelphia [Fifty Days at Iliam]. I can do it real good now. I mean much easier and better. I think I'm in a good point of working.

Cy Twombly passed away in Rome yesterday at the age of 83. He was one of my dearest and most admired contemporary artist. These images from my garden are my gift in his honor.
