yo te he visto, aspirando distraído
A un viejo y distinguido señor
Te he visto, por el parque ceniciento
que los poetas aman
para llorar, como una noble sombra
vagar, envuelto en tu levita larga.
El talante cortés, ha tantos años
compuesto de una fiesta en la antesala,
¡qué bien tus pobres huesos
ceremoniosos guardan!
Yo te he visto, aspirando distraído
con el aliento que la tierra exhala
-hoy, tibia tarde en que las mustias hojas
húmedo viento arranca-
del eucalipto verde
el frescor de las hojas perfumadas.
Y te he visto llevar la seca mano
a la perla que brilla en tu corbata.
Antonio Machado
To an old and distinguished gentleman
I have seen you, in the ash grey park
which poets love
to cry in, like a noble shade
wander, wrapped in your long coat.
The polite presence, has for many years
composed a party in the entrance room,
how well your poor ceremonious
bones save!
I have seen you , aspiring distracted,
with the breath the earth exhales
-today, a warm afternoon in which the withered leaves
the wet wind blows-
from the green eucaliptus
the freshness of scented leaves.
And I have seen you take the dry hand
toward the pearl that shines on your tie.
