Leonardo: Florencia, 1500

Acaba de volver del mercado con varias jaulas a cuestas. Las coloca en el balcón, abre las puertitas y huyen los pájaros. Mira los pájaros perdiéndose en el cielo, aleteos, alegrías y después se sienta a trabajar.

       El sol del mediodía le calienta la mano. Sobre un amplio cartón, Leonardo Da Vinci dibuja el mundo. Y en el mundo que Leonardo dibuja, aparecen las tierras que ha encontrado Colón por los rumbos del ocaso. El artista las inventa, como antes ha inventado el avión, el tanque, el paracaídas y el submarino, y les da forma como antes ha encarnado el misterio de las vírgenes y la pasión de los santos: imagina el cuerpo de América, que todavía no se llama así, y la dibuja como tierra nueva y no como parte del Asia.

       Colón, buscando el Levante, ha encontrado el Poniente. Leonardo adivina que el mundo ha crecido.

He is just back from the market holding several cages in his hands. He puts them on the balcony, opens the little doors and the birds scape. He looks at the birds get lost in the sky, fluttering, happy, and then sits down to work.
        The midday sun warms his hand. On a large board, Leonardo da Vinci draws the world. And in the world that Leonardo draws, the lands that Columbus found in the direction of the sunset appear. The artist invents them, as he previously invented the airplane, the tank, the parachute and the submarine, and gives them form as before he incarnated the mystery of the virgin and the passion of the saints: he imagines the body of America, not yet named like that, and the new earth and draws it as a new land and not as part of Asia.
        Columbus, seeking the Levant, has found the West. Leonardo guesses that the world has grown.
