adiós al siglo XX
a Alvaro Mutis
Cruzo la calle Marx, la calle Freud;
ando por una orilla de este siglo,
despacio, insomne, caviloso.
Cruzo la calle Mao, la calle Stalin;
miro el instante donde muere un milenio
y otro despunta su terrestre dominio.
Mi siglo vertical y lleno de teorías...
Mi siglo con sus guerras sus posguerras
y su tambor de Hitler allá lejos,
ando por una orilla de este siglo,
despacio, insomne, caviloso.
Cruzo la calle Mao, la calle Stalin;

Farewell to the Twentieth Century
to Alvaro Mutis
I cross Marx street, Freud street;
I walk down one edge of this century,
slowly, sleepless, brooding,
honorary spy of some Gothic kingdom,
collecting dropped vocals, small pebbles
tattooed with infinite rumor.
Mondrian's line before my eyes
cutting the night in straight shadows
now that there is no more space for loneliness
on the walls of glass.
I cross Mao street, Stalin street;
I look at the instant where a millennium dies
and the other dawns its terrestrial domain.
My vertical century and full of theories ...
My century with its wars, its postwars
and Hitler and his drum far away
between blood and abyss.
I continue between the stones of the old suburbs
for a drink, for a little jazz,
contemplating the gods that sleep dissolved
in the sawdust of bars,
while I decipher their names on the step
and go on my way.
