Hallows Eve: Halloween, the Witches' New Year

         Thus we arrive at Hekate's bad name and the maligning of witchcraft in general as a dark, "black" art. But going down the unconscious and coming back out again are necessary, vital parts of the soul's search for meaning, which is what the Crone and her nighttime skills of divining and foretelling the future represents. "Out of the dark wait and expectation comes the birth moment...the song, prophesy, or poem is always a breakthrough." As Queen of the Dead, Hekate was ruler of regeneration. It was Hekate to whom the ancients prayed for protection and long life, since it was she who controlled both life and death. Hekate's holiday is Hallomas or All Hallows Eve (Hallo-een), october 31st, when the spirits of the dead are said to walk the earth and the boundaries blur between life and death. As mother of the witches, Hekate represents magic and the working of the spells for good or ill. In some circles Halloween is recognized as the Withches' new Year.

         According to Monaghan, in the Book of Goddesses and Heroines, "While Hekate walked outdoors, her worshipers gathered inside to eat Hecate suppers in her honor, gatherings at which magical knowledge was shared and the secrets of sorcery whispered." In another sense, "Hekate suppers" were ritually prepared food that was often left at crossroads, particularly at places where three roads came together. Murray, in the God of Witches, tells us that worshipers would arrange a statue of Hekate " so that she could look down all three roads at once." In many traditions, Hekate has three heads herself or a houd with three heads as her mascot.

             Así llegamos al mal nombre de Hécate y la difamación de la brujería en general como un arte oscuro, "negro". Pero bajar al inconsciente y volver de nuevo son partes necesarias y vitales de la búsqueda de sentido del alma, que es lo que representan la Anciana y sus habilidades nocturnas de adivinación y predicción del futuro. "Al otro extremo de la oscuridad y la espera llega el momento del nacimiento ... la canción, la profecía, o el poema es siempre un gran avance." Como la Reina de los Muertos, Hécate era el gobernante de la regeneración. Fue Hekate a quien los antiguos rezaban por protección y larga vida, ya que ella controlaba la vida y la muerte. El día de fiesta de Hécate es Hallomas o All Hallows Eve (Hallo-een), 31 de octubre, cuando los espíritus de los muertos andan por la tierra y se borran las fronteras entre la vida y la muerte. Como madre de las brujas, Hécate representa la magia y el trabajo de los hechizos para bien o para mal. En algunos círculos, Halloween es reconocido como el Año Nuevo de las Brujas.

En otro sentido, "cenas de Hécate" eran alimentos rituales preparados para ser dejados con frecuencia en encrucijadas, especialmente en lugares donde tres caminos se cruzaban. Murray, en El Dios de las brujas, nos dice que los fieles se hacían cargo de una estatua de Hécate "para que pudiera mirar hacia los tres caminos a la vez." En muchas tradiciones, Hécate tiene tres cabezas ella misma o lleva un perro con tres cabezas como su mascota.
