lo que ocurre es el olvido de lo humano: el espectro de nuestra época

---Si partirmos de la afirmación de Karl Kraus según la cual "es en sus palabras y no en sus actos donde yo he detectado el espectro de la época", ¿cómo definiría los tiempos que corren?

----Espantosos, y el lenguaje no es ajeno a lo humano, a lo que acontece, pero necesitaría más tiempo para contestarte. Basta leer el periódico o ver la televisión o escuchar la radio para horrorizarse. Si permanecemos inconmovibles, hemos perdido capacidad de reacción. Tal vez eso está pasando. ¿Qué presenciamos? División de los seres humanos por ideologías, religiones que no son religiosas, matanzas de pueblos por gobernantes criminales para conservar el poder, nacionalismos insensatos por parte de los países menos desarrollados y de los llamados imperios, pues es una enfermedad de todos, cuando el planeta y la inteligencia piden algo diferente. En suma, lo que ocurre es el olvido de lo humano por intereses económicos, políticos o ideológicos. Aquí (en Venezuela) el término imposición resume estos doce años; urge cambiarlo por convivencia.

---En el ensayo En torno al lenguaje señaló que Venezuela, en cuanto al idioma, se encontraba en un estado de indigencia. Luego de casi tres décadas de su publicación, ¿cómo estamos?

---Es difícil saberlo, pero ha habido un descenso cualitativo en la educación. 

---Cuando recibió el Premio FIL de Literatura en Lenguas Romances 2009, en Guadalajara, hizo un llamado a los intelectuales hispanoamericanos: "Cuiden su democracia, aunque sea deficiente, aunque no sea cabal, para evitar que pueda ser destruída por algún caudillo". ¿Qué sucedió con la intelectualidad venezolana?

---Los escritores y poetas de aquí desertaron de la función crítica que les corresponde. Creo que no se atreven a opinar libremente. Han perdido su independencia. No pueden opinar aunque disientan de alguna posición oficial. Habría que preguntarles si están de acuerdo, por ejemplo, con el apoyo de este gobierno a todas las actuales dictaduras, las monarquías nada democráticas y los regímenes teocráticos que azotan a mujeres.

---¿Qué es la democracia para Rafael Cadenas?

---Una forma de gobierno que garantiza la libertad sin la cual el vivir resulta inconcebible. Por eso trasciende lo político y entra en el terreno del espíritu. Ha de estar presente en la calle, en el trabajo, en la casa. El demócrata debe serlo en todas las ocasiones y con todos sus semejantes. Democracia significa respetar al que piensa de manera diferente, no considerarlo enemigo. Pensando en ello, en el peligro que entraña, escribí este tríptico:

La sangrante palabra

enemigo toca

puertas en son de guerra.

---If we depart from Karl Kraus' affirmation that "it is in their words and not in their actions where I have found the spectrum of the age", how would you define these days?

---Frightful, and language is not foreign to humans, of what is happening, but I would need more time to answer you. It is enough just to read the newspaper or watch TV or listen to radio to become horrified. If we remain unshaken, we have lost responsiveness. Maybe that is happening. What do we witness? Division of humans by ideologies, religions which are not religious, the killing of people by criminal rulers to maintain power, foolish nationalism in the least developed countries and so-called empires, since it is a disease of all, when the planet and the intelligence ask for something different. In short, what happens is the neglect of the human through economic, political or ideological interests. Here (in Venezuela) the term imposition summarizes these twelve years; it is necessary to change it for coexistence.

---In the essay On language you said that Venezuela, about the language, was in a state of destitution. After nearly three decades of publication, how are we now?

---It is hard to know, but there has been a decline in he quality of education.

---When you received the 2009 FIL Literary Award in Romance Languages in Guadalajara, you made a call to the Spanish American intellectuals: "Take care of your democracy, even if it is deficient, even if it is not thorough, to prevent it from being destroyed by a tyrant". What  has happened to the Venezuelan intelligentsia?

---Writers and poets from here have deserted the critical role that corresponds to them. I believe they do not dare to think freely. They have lost their independence. They can not give their opinions even if they disagree from some official position. They should be asked if they agree, for example, with the support of the current government to current dictatorships, undemocratic monarchies and theocratic regimes that beat women.

--- What is democracy for Rafael Cadenas?

--- A form of government which guarantees freedom without which life is inconceivable. This is the reason it trascends the political and enters the realm of the spirit. It must be present on the street, at work, at home. The democrat should be a democrat at every occasion and with all his fellowmen. Democracy means respecting those who think differently, not considering them as enemies. Thinking about it, on the danger involved, I wrote this triptic:

The bloody word
touches enemy
doors on the warpath.
