Si bien una zona importante del arte moderno intentó aproximar el arte y la vida, justamente impulsando el desarrollo del diseño, el dominio que finalmente alcanzara en el campo artístico el criterio de que al arte le correspondía explorar sus propios códigos visuales terminó por levantar una empalizada entre la referencialidad cotidiana y la exploración artística. Las propuestas más reflexivas del arte contemporáneo, tomando en cuenta esta circunstancia, han enfrentado una redimensión del asunto. Como concepto, Utilitaria alude a la disolución de las fronteras entre lo funcional y lo artístico, con el objetivo de mostrar la existencia de múltiples posibilidades expresivas que pueden formar parte de la cotidianidad y contribuir a reconocernos como sujetos estéticos, formados culturalmente en una pluralidad que no es favorecida formalmente por la llamada historia del arte.
Por otra parte, creemos en la capacidad creativa y comunicativa del diseño y en sus posibilidades de expansión y, por ello, consideramos que esta propuesta puede contribuir a ampliar las perspectivas sobre las condiciones de producción de esta rama que siempre ha expresado profundos lazos con el campo artístico, aunque no con frecuencia reconocidos de manera explícita. Una de las riquezas del diseño cotidiano es que no sólo responde a la capacidad creativa de quien lo hace, sino a una realidad concreta muy nuestra de resolver de manera inmediata las carencias que existen en el mercado de los objetos, en su mayoría importados de China.

While an important area of modern art tried to bring art and life together, especially stimulating the development of design, the domain that finally reached the arts in the view that art should explore its own visual codes eventually built a fence between everyday references and artistic exploration. The more reflective proposals of contemporary art, taking into account this circumstance, have faced a resizing of the matter. As a concept, Utilitaria refers to the dissolution of boundaries between the functional and the artistic, with the aim of showing the existence of multiple expressive possibilities that may be part of daily life and contributes to the recognition of ourselves as aesthetic individuals, culturally educated in a plurality that is not favored formally by the so called art history.
Moreover, we believe in creative and communicative design and its potential for expansion and, therefore, consider that this proposal may contribute to broaden perspectives on the conditions of production of this area which has always expressed deep ties to the artistic field, though not often explicitly recognized. One of the riches of everyday design is that it does not only respond to the creative ability of the makers, but also to a very concrete reality with which we resolve in an immediate manner the scarcity in the market of the items, mostly imported from China.
