Moon: experiencing the mystery, number 18

When you get the Moon in a reading of the Tarot, there is nothing to do but yield to the feelings. If you try to figure out things intellectually, you will fail. The moon is a sign of unconsciousness-- you may as well flow with it. If you can open yourself to being in the moment and not trying to figure out what lies ahead; if you can enter the darkness with eagerness and courage; if you can trust in the higher powers to guide you intuitively through the journey of darkness and the unknown, then you will learn from the voyage and gain consciousness as your initiatory gift.

          To imagine the friendly darkness inherent in this journey toward consciousness, try to envision going down into the deepest chamber of a pyramid; or imagine the innermost sanctuary of a sacred cave of our Paleolithic European ancestors; or try to think what a Native American might have felt in a pueblo, going down into the Great Kiva to await rebirth into sunshine. Finally, let your feelings float back to your own experience of growing in the amniotic waters until, finally, when the time came, you were born from the safe dark womb space into the light.

          The Moon represents the core of the ancient female mysteries-- the journey into the labyrinth, the underground dwelling of the Goddess. The labyrinth is the holy path to the center and back out again, the moon wheel which spins in both directions, bringing knowledge and energy for both creation and destruction. Very similar labyrinths are found as far away as India, Crete, and Arizona; and a simplified version of the labyrinth, the double spiral, is found everywhere in the world. The spiral, like the snake, is always a symbol of the Goddess; specially of the femenine power of regeneration- the going in and coming out again. The way is marked by Ariadne, Cretan Goddess who had the spiderlike foresight to unroll a thread as she entered the labyrinth.

          Cuando sale la Luna en una lectura del tarot, no hay nada que hacer sino ceder a los sentimientos. Si tratas de entender las cosas intelectualmente, fracasarás. La luna es un signo del inconsciente - lo mejor es fluir. Laberintos muy similares se encuentran lugares tan lejanos como la India, Creta, y Arizona, y una versión simplificada del laberinto, la doble espiral, se encuentra en todas partes del mundo. La espiral, como la serpiente, es siempre un símbolo de la Diosa, especialmente del poder femenino de la regeneración, la que entra y sale de nuevo.
