Entusiasmo
Éstas serán las últimas lluvias,
se adivinan a lo lejos, amenazan
con truenos y centellas, ráfagas grises
que oscurecen los cielos despejados.
Se aproximan y con radiante entusiasmo
descienden sobre montes y sabanas,
avivan el cauce lento de los ríos
y alegran la mirada fija del rebaño.
Los arroyos conocen el vano esfuerzo,
las vegas lo recuerdan. Su presencia
es la más efímera; su bondad es aislada
por el humo y la sequía sin descanso.
Las últimas lluvias del año sólo alegran
a los ignorantes, ciegos y desahuciados.

These will be the last rains,
foreseen in the distance, they threaten
with thunder and lightning, gray gusts
darken the clear skies.
They approach and with radiant enthusiasm
descend upon mountains and savannas,
excite the slow course of the rivers
and rejoice the herd's fixed stare.
The brooks know the vain effort,
flood plains remember. Their presence
is the most ephemeral, their goodness is isolated
by smoke and drought relentlessly.
The last rains of the year only rejoice
the ignorant, blind and hopeless.
