A story
Sad is a man who is asked for a story
and can't come up with one.
His five-year-old son waits in his lap.
Not the same story, Baba. A new one.
The man rubs his shin, scratches his ears.
In a room full of books in a world
of stories, he can recall
not one, and soon, he thinks, the boy
will give up on his father.
Already the man lives far ahead, he sees
the day this boy will go. Don't go!
Hear the alligator story! The angel story once more!
You love the spider story. You laugh at the spider.
Let me tell it!
But the boy is packing his shirts,
he is looking for his keys. Are you a god,
the man screams, that I sit mute before you?
Am I a god that I should never disappoint?
But the boy is here. Please, Baba, a story?
It is an emotional rather than a logical equation,
an earthly rather than a heavenly one,
which posits that a boy's supplications
and a father's love add up to silence.

Un cuento
Triste es un hombre al que se le pide un cuento
y no puede encontrar uno.
Su hijo de cinco años de edad espera en su regazo.
No el mismo cuento, Baba. Uno nuevo.
El hombre frota su barbilla, se rasca las orejas.
En una habitación llena de libros en un mundo
de cuentos, no puede recordar
ninguno, y pronto, piensa, el niño
renunciará a su padre.
Ya el hombre vive el futuro, ve
el día en el que muchacho se va. ¡No te vayas!
¡Escucha el cuento del cocodrilo! ¡El cuento del ángel una vez más!
Te encanta el cuento de la araña. Te ríes de la araña.
¡Deja que te lo cuente!
Pero el niño está empacando sus camisas,
busca sus llaves. ¿Eres un dios,
el hombre grita, que me siento mudo ante de ti?
¿Soy un dios que nunca debe decepcionar?
Pero el niño está aquí. Por favor, Baba, ¿un cuento?
Es una ecuación emocional más que lógica,
terrenal en vez de celestial,
que plantea que las súplicas de un niño
y el amor de un padre suman silencio.
