Caracas

Caracas
So high are the buildings
I no longer see any of my childhood.
I lost my backyard with its slow clouds
where light left ibis feathers,
Egyptian clarities,
I lost my name and the dream of my home.
Straight scaffolding, tower on tower,
hide the mountain from us.
Noise grows a thousand engines per ear,
a thousand cars per foot, all fatal.
The shoulders run behind their voices
but the voices drift
behind the taxi.
More distant than Thebes, Troy, Nineveh
and fragments of their dreams,
Caracas, where was it?
I lost my shadow and the feel of its stones,
and no longer see any of my childhood.
I can now walk about the streets
groping, increasingly in solitary,
its space is real, undaunted, concrete,
just my story is false.
