Lejano
Noche sin gallos, sin un solo gallo
que con su grito del último ángel
nos devuelve a la casa.
Noche donde la ausencia sopla una bujía
y a oscuras oímos en el patio
a otros muertos que hablan otra lengua
y no nos acompañan.
Noche en que el río de nuestra aldea
suena ya lejos, más lejos que los astros.

Night without rooster, without a single rooster
howling like the last angel
to usher us home.
Night in which absence blows out the candle;
in the dark we hear others of the dead
on the patio who speak another tongue
and do not escort us.
Night in which our village's river
distantly flutters, farther off than the stars.
