Cuando le dijeron

   Cuando le dijeron que estaba vigilado,

que por las noches cuando él salía

alguien con una experta llave entraba en la habitación

y hurgaba en los frascos de aspirina

y en los consabidos, indiferentes, libros;

   cuando le dijeron que decenas de policías

en su honor trajinaban,

que habían logrado sobornar a sus familiares más allegados,

que sus amigos más íntimos

ocultaban tras los testículos mínimas libretas

donde anotaban sus silencios y comas,

                                                               no sintió miedo,

pero sí cierta sensación de fastidio

que al instante supo controlar:

No van a lograr, se prometió, que me considere importante.

 When they told him

    When told that he was being watched,

that when he went out at night

someone with a master key entered the room

and rummaged through the aspirin bottles

and through the usual, indifferent, books;

    when they told him that dozens of police

bustled in his honor,

that they had managed to bribe his closest relatives,

that his closest friends

hid in their testicles the smallest notebooks

where they wrote down their silences and commas,

                                                                he felt no fear,

but a sense of annoyance

that he knew instantly how to control:

They won't be able, he promised himself, to make me feel important.
