Ogres
All night waking to the sound
of light rain falling softly
through the leaves in the quiet
valley below the window
and to Paula lying here
asleep beside me and to
the murmur beside the bed
of the dogs' snoring like small
waves coming ashore I
am amazed at the fortune
of this moment in the whole
of the dark this unspoken
favor while it is with us
this breathing peace and then I
think of the frauds in office
at this instant devising
their massacres in my name
what part of me could they have
come from were they made of my
loathing itself and dredged from
the bitter depths of my shame

Ogros
Toda la noche me despertaba la lluvia
que caía despacito entre las hojas
en el valle durmiente bajo la ventana
y la Paula dormida aquí a mi lado y
junto a la cama los perros
roncaban, el murmurar
de olas bajitas en una playa
me asombra la fortuna de este
momento en la totalidad de la noche este
favor sin nombrar, mientras nos dure
este resuello de paz y entonces
me acuerdo de los farsantes en el poder
que en este momento idean
sus masacres en mi nombre
¿de cuál parte de mí pudieron haberse
originado, nacerían de mi odio y los dragarían
de lo hondo y más amargo de mi vergüenza?
