si hubiéramos celebrated::if we had celebrated

 Si hubiéramos celebrado 

el cumpleaños del poema,

si mi vida hubiera sido

como el hilo de una metáfora

y mis pretendientes aficionados

a vicios más erráticos.

Si el inicio hubiera sido

como estas mis nuevas costumbres.

Si toda mi primera vida

no hubiese caído en desuso, como hoy.

Quizás no conocería la diferencia.

Porque desear y apostar es lo mismo.

 If we had celebrated

the poem's birthday,

if my life had been

like the thread of a metaphor

and my suitors enthusiastic about

more erratic vices.

If the beginning had been

like these my new customs.

If all my early life

would not have fallen into disuse, like today.

Maybe I would not know the difference.

Because wishing and betting are the same.
