Cerca con grandes muros aquél que te sueñas. 

Después, donde es visible el jardín 

a través del portón de reja adecuada, 

pon las flores que sean las más risueñas, 

para que te conozcan sólo así. 

Donde nadie lo vea no pongas nada.

Haz macizos como los que otros tienen, 

donde las miradas puedan entrever 

tu jardín tal como se lo vas a mostrar. 

Pero donde es tuyo, y nunca lo ve nadie, 

deja las flores que vienen del suelo crecer 

y deja las hierbas naturales medrar.

Haz de ti mismo un doble ser guardado; 

y que nadie, que vea y mire, pueda 

saber de ti más de lo que sabe un jardín— 

un jardín mostrable y reservado, 

por detrás del cual la flor nativa roza 

la hierba tan pobre que ni tú la ves...

 Advice

Put high walls around the parts of you that dreams yourself.

Then place as many cheerful flowers as you can

there where the garden might be seen,
behind the gate, between the bars,
so they may recognize you this way only. 
Where no one sees it, put nothing.

Lay flower beds like those that others lay,
and place them where eyes might spot
your garden as you plan to show it.
But where you dwell and no one ever looks
let flowers shoot up freely from the ground
And let the grass grow naturally.

Make yourself a doubly sheltered being,
so no one who looks or tries to see may
know more than the garden that you are-
a garden private and ostensible,
behind which flowers lightly touch
the grass so spare not even you can spot it...
