FÁBULA
Nos dio el gato y la liebre
para que supiéramos
la distancia
entre lo que se puede tocar
y lo intocable.
Quizás los conejos,
para que no confundiéramos
gato con liebre.
Al leopardo le debemos
la belleza de la caza
solitaria,
y los lobos fueron el don
para que aprendiéramos
a cazar en jauría.
La red de la araña,
dicen los chinos,
nos la dio
para que aprendiéramos
a viajar por hilos de seda
y hacer sopa de nidos de golondrina.
Sin los animales
seguiríamos en la planicie de la especie.
¿Por qué nos hizo nacer?
¿Por qué nos devora?
Hay que darle las gracias,
sin preguntarse demasiado,
y bendecir a las presas
que pasan,
como pasaremos nosotros,
por su vientre.
FABLE
He gave us the cat and the hare
so we would know
the distance
from what you can touch
and the untouchable.
Maybe rabbits,
so we wouldn't confuse
cat from hare.
We owe the leopard
the beauty of hunting
alone,
and the wolves were the gift
so that we would learn
to hunt in a pack.
The spider's web,
the Chinese tell,
was given to us
so that we would learn
to travel on silk threads
and make soup from swallow's nests.
Without animals
we would still be on the plain of the species.
Why did He make us be born?
Why does He devour us?
We must be thankful,
without asking too much,
and bless the prey
we encounter,
like we would pass by,
through its belly.
